VP5 has across the board dramatic improvements with interlaced source material. VP5 implements true field-based techniques at its core, allowing us to cut bit-rates by as much as half of competitive codecs, while maintaining the same perceptual level of quality.
Other competitive codecs, such as MPEG-4, have yet to even demonstrate true interlaced support for broadcast applications.
Unlike other "next generation" or "theoretical" codecs, VP5 is designed to run on mainstream processors without a major impact on quality.
Other new codecs are being proposed that may come close to the visual results of VP5, but they've been analyzed and found to come with a huge price tag of complexity.
It is simply not possible to enable all their bells and whistles and have the codec perform well, even at low resolution and bit rates!
