ReadingRater is an application that gets the reading level of a piece of text (just about any size). It uses multiple formulas for caculating reading level and averages the result.
It has been tested against several of these formulas with a number of different texts for accuracy and has shown to be with in a reasonable margin of these formula results.
The way the program works is that it counts the sentences, the word counts in the sentences, and the syllable counts in the words and then plugs this data into the various formulas to get the results.
It uses a "learning" functionality to "learn" what word patterns have what number of syllables, using a "finger print" approach to enable it to learn any number of possible words from just one word being "taught" by the user.
