Movecapture is a small freeware tool which will use your webcam to automatically save a JPG image whenever some movement is detected, so it could be used as a simple CCTV system.

It checks the webcam once per second and compares the current image with the one taken 1 second ago. If there is a significant change detected between images the program will immediately write a JPG image to disk, and speed up the checking so it now checks 10 times per second instead of just once - this means that if somebody is walking in front of your webcam it will save 10 frames a second, not quite movie quality but this way it uses far less disk space. After 5 seconds have elapsed with no movement detected it will revert back to checking every one second.
